OrderingHow Many Aluminum Cups Should You Order?
Ordering custom aluminum cups for the first time, most teams either overbuy on a design they’ll tweak or underbuy and miss the volume price — and both cost money. Because decorated metal cups carry a setup cost, the per-unit price drops sharply with quantity, so the right order size is as much about economics as it is about how many drinks you’ll pour.
Here’s how to size an order once you separate your program into its real needs.
First run: order to a real tier
For a first run, don’t order the bare minimum — setup dominates at low volumes, so the per-cup price at 100 can be well above the price at 1,000. If the design is final, ordering up one tier usually costs only marginally more total while cutting your per-unit cost sharply. If the design might change, order a small sample run first.
Replenishment: base it on turn rate
Tie your quantity to how fast cups leave — for a taproom selling reusable pints or a venue restocking, order enough for a full season and reorder at about three weeks of cover so a reprint lands before you run out. Because we keep your cup spec and artwork on file, reorders are fast and match exactly.
Multi-style: consolidate to share setup
If you run several cup styles — pints for the taproom, tumblers for gifting, mule mugs for cocktails — order them together. Combining designs into one production window shares setup and hits a higher combined tier, which lowers the price on every cup at once.
| Stage | Starting quantity | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Design final | Order to a real tier (often 1,000+) | Setup cost dominates at low volume |
| Design uncertain | Small sample run first | Validate before scaling |
| Replenishment | A full season of turn rate | Reorder at ~3 weeks cover |
| Multi-style | Combine designs in one run | Share setup, hit a higher tier |
The single biggest lever on per-cup cost is quantity: once your artwork is final, ordering up one tier usually pays for itself immediately.
